How to Use Undelete to Bring Back Accidentally Deleted Files

When you delete a file, the common belief is that it is gone for good. However, this is not always true with a recently deleted file. In order for the file to be completely irrecoverable, the drive sector where the file was stored would need to be overwritten with another file or system structure. If the boot sector has not yet been overwritten, a recovery utility such as WinUndelete may help you restore the file. The restore process takes just a few steps, and could save you the permanent loss of needed information.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch the WinUndelete application. Select the appropriate drive letter for the original location of the file you wish to recover.

    • 2

Specify the type of file you are trying to locate and select a location for the application to write the recovered file to. The new location should not be the same drive as the original location as this can result in permanent loss of the file.

    • 3

Scroll through the list of files located by the application during the file scan, working your way through the directory structure to locate the specific file you want to restore. Click the file and select the option to recover it to the specified partition. You also may opt to save the entire result file so that you may reference it later to restore data.

    • 4

Click "Quick Find" on the toolbar to locate a file by inputting part of the file name to search. This can help narrow down your search results if you do not want to search strictly by file type.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many deleted files are recoverable. The longer you wait to recover an accidentally deleted file, the lower your chances of restoring it become because the drive sector may get overwritten during normal use of your computer.
