The first thing you need to do to have a profitable business selling books online is by having a selection of books that will actually sell. I hate to say this but a large quantity of books are considered "garbage" when you are trying to sell them online. Here's a few good tips tell if a book is "garbage". First off, go with your instinct. This may sound ridiculous especially if you have never tried to sell a book online, but just follow your gut. If you're personally interested in the book youre considering buying odds are someone else would be interested in it too. You should always avoid books with two or more copyright dates, or evidence of more than one printing. Don't buy book club additions such as book of the month club. Everybody is trying to sell these books, plus they are made cheaper, and of less value. Always buy books with dust jackets. Not doing so will decrease the value of the book. A heavier book that seems like it was made well is almost always better than a flimsy paperback. Non-fiction titles normally sell for more than a fiction.

Now that you have a general idea what to look for, you're probably wondering where to get these books in the first place. You should consider these following options. The first place would be a yard sale. Yard sales are a great place to find books for your online book business. Remember to stay firm with the price. If you're just starting off I would recommend that you don't spend more than a dollar for a book. If they refuse to go that low for the book do not give in unless you know that the book is in high demand, and will sell well. A few other great places to find books for your online book business is a thrift shop, flea market, or a used bookstore. Just remember the same rule applies. Do not spend more than a dollar! The final way to find books for your online bookstore would be online classifieds like craigslist, or kijiji. In the search box type "books", or even better "book lots". Call or email to see the books. Use the tips from step one.

So you now have your inventory. Your probably thinking, where am I going to sell these books? There are many options but the number one online book marketplace is amazon.com by far! I was selling my used books for almost $500 a month. I only had about 70 books listed! There are other options though like ebay, and ebay's company specifically designed for books, half.com. There's also a really cool site called alibris. This site does cost money but you only make your listing once and it uploads it to the top 9 book selling sites! Once your book sells it than deletes it from all of the sites, so you don't sell more than you have.

Once you have decided what company you want to sell with you will start listing. I can not stress this enough! You need to be completely honest when it comes to how to describe the book. If your customer receives the book, and is not happy with it they can file a claim which can result in account suspension, or worse termination. You don't want that! When deciding what to list your book price at there are a few things to consider. The most important thing to consider is what the same book is selling for in other listings. Amazon has a feature while listing where you can see what the average sell price is for your book, and the most recent sale price is. I highly recommend that you used this feature! Another thing to consider is how much you paid for the book, you are obviously going to want to make the price higher than the purchase price. Just remember that you don't want your book to be priced to high because your potential buyers will not purchase it.
