How to Connect to the Internet From a Network

Connecting to the Internet, which is actually a network, from a smaller network, such as a home or school network, is very simple. There are two ways to connect to a network and then connect to the internet. First, you can connect to a wireless network through a wireless router, or you can connect to a wired network with a wired router. Also, you might need a password to access some of the networks.

Instructions

  1. Wireless Network

    • 1

Connect a network adapter to your computer. If your computer already has a network adapter built-in, which almost all laptops do, you can skip this step, but make sure your wireless adapter is turned on (some laptops have toggle switches, which helps save battery if you want to work offline).

Go to the "Control Panel" and click on "Network Connections." Right-click the "Wireless Network Connection" and select "View Available Wireless Networks." A list of all the wireless network connections in range of your computer will appear.

    • 3

Click the wireless network connection that you want to connect to. If the network has a password, it will ask you for it now. Type in the password and hit "Enter." Now your computer will be connected to the internet.

    Wired Network

Connect an ethernet cable from the wired router to the ethernet port on your computer. For a picture, see the link Resources.

    • 5

Open a web browser to see if you are connected to the Internet. Usually, you will automatically connect to the internet once the cable is plugged in.

    • 6

      Browse the Internet.
