There are two different versions of WordPress: the freely hosted WordPress.com blog and the blog-authoring software available to independently hosted blogs (WordPress.org). The variety of themes is more limited for the free WordPress.com accounts, but changing the themes for both versions of WordPress is similar in technique and easy to do.
Changing the Theme for a WordPress Blog
Login to your WordPress blog account. Go to your Dashboard.
Click on the "Appearance" tab in the sidebar on the left side of your Dashboard. Click "Themes" in the new page that loads.
Choose from your options. If you want to search for themes, type in your search keywords or make selections from the checklist, then click the "Find Themes" button. If you have a self-hosted WordPress blog and you want to upload a new theme from your computer's hard drive, click "Upload" and follow the instructions.
Click "Activate" in the "Available Themes" section to activate your new theme.
See how the new theme looks on your blog: scroll up to the top of the page and click the "Visit Site" button at the top-left corner of the Dashboard.
Tips & Warnings
- The "Preview" link is a convenient way of seeing how the new theme looks on your blog before activating the theme.
- Always ensure that your WordPress blog is up to date. WordPress upgrades are usually issued for security reasons, so an older version of WordPress may have security holes. It is advisable that you update to the most recent version of WordPress before installing a new theme.
