How to Make Decorative Molding Using Plaster of Paris
Plaster of Paris can be used for both home improvement and decorative needs. Though plaster cannot be sculpted, it can readily take on the forms in preset molds fairly quickly and easily. The molds can be used to create art projects or decorative molding used as trimmings on walls, ceilings or columns to create a more Victorian or opulent decor for the household.

- Mold
- Plaster of Paris mix
- Plastic container
- Water
- Measuring cup
- Metal whisk
- Cooking spray
- Wire hanger (optional)
- Flat edge (ruler, squeegee or cardboard)
- Knife

Pick a mold. Pick out a mold for the plaster to be cast in. Molds can be found at arts and crafts stores and some hardware stores. The molds at hardware stores are molds and trims for ceilings, walls and columns.

Mix the plaster. Follow the manufacturer's directions on the back of the box or bag to mix the compound. Mix in a plaster container for easy cleanup. The general ratio for mixing is one part plaster to two parts water. Mix it with metal whisk.

Spray the mold with cooking spray. This will make the release of the dry plaster easier.

Pour the plaster. Slowly pour the plaster mix into the mold, filling it evenly. Once filled, lift the mold and tap the surface to avoid air bubbles. Level off the plaster using a squeegee or any flat edge, such as cardboard.

Let it dry. Let the mold dry for 30 to 45 minutes. If planning to hang the molding, insert a U-shaped wiring into the back of the mold while it is still wet.

Release the mold. Turn the mold over and gently push the plaster mold out. When released, smooth out edges with a knife or finger nails. The mold will harden completely within 24 hours.
