How to Look at Internet History on a Hard Disk

You can get a good feel for where a user has been on the Internet based on the Internet history saved on the hard disk. And while these files don't provide a highly descriptive list, you can pretty much see each website the user visited and explore the cookies downloaded or the images he or she was looking at. Note that you can also use this method to delete the history files found on the hard disk.

Instructions

    • 1

Close out of any Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer applications.

    • 2

In Windows, click the Start menu button in the bottom left hand corner of your screen and select the Control Panel.

    • 3

Double-click Internet Options. This brings up a dialog box similar to what you would see in Internet Explorer's Tools Menu, where you can also access this same information.

    • 4

Click on the "General" tab and select the "Settings" button under "Browsing History."

    • 5

Select the "View Files" option and wait for the list of files to be populated. In this list you can see images, cookie files and temporary files cached from the websites explored using this computer.

    • 6

Select the "OK" or "Cancel" button to close out of this window. You can also delete the Internet history by pressing the "Delete Files" option underneath "Browsing History" in the General Settings tab. Note that this will not delete the cookies, just the temporary Internet files.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not delete Internet files or passwords unless you have permission or know you have no use for them anymore. Oftentimes users store passwords in the browser to be saved because they cannot remember them otherwise; they might not have any other backup.
