How to Caulk LCF Window Frames
When installing or repairing your LCF (lockable cat flap) window, the caulking will provide a tight seal around the cat entry/exit window and keep any rain or moisture from seeping into the interior of the cat window and potentially causing rot or wood damage. A latex caulk is a great choice as you can purchase it in various colors to match your project or custom paint it to fit your needs. For the best seal, it is recommended to caulk the LCF window during the installation process, but you can always caulk after installation or as repair or new caulk is needed. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Clean the entire area around the LCF window, where the LCF window is mounted to the door. Scrap away any old caulking with the putty knife.
If this is a new installation of a LCF window, be sure to wipe away any sawdust or debris around the opening for the window.

2
Cut 1/4 inch off the tip at the end of nozzle on the tub of caulk. Insert the tube into the caulking gun.

3
Apply a bead of caulk starting at one corner of the LCF window and move in a slow consistent rate, holding the caulking gun at a 45-degree angle and forcing the caulk into the crack or edges around the LCF window.
If this is a new installation of an LCF window, apply caulk under the outer frame to provide an additional seal against moisture getting in under the LCF window frame.
Repeat this step until all cracks/edges around the LCF window have been caulked.
-
4
Run your finger gently down the bead of caulk, or use the putty knife, to press the caulk into place and provide a smooth and paint friendly seal of caulk around the LCF window. Wipe any excess caulk off with the rag.
Allow the caulk to fully dry, following the manufacturer guidelines on the tube of caulk. Typically, drying time is overnight.

Tips & Warnings
You can also use warm soapy water to clean the area to be caulked.
Avoid the use of chemicals to clean the window because this could leave a oily film that may prohibit the caulk from adhering to the wall/window.
