Determining the right size for a man's coat is necessary in order to ensure comfort as well as to create an attractive appearance. Selecting the proper size coat is sometimes difficult since some coats are manufactured in numbered sizes while others are manufactured in generic small, medium and large sizes. Place a tape measure around the entire circumference of the man's chest just under the arms. The measurement in inches is the size of coat that the man needs. For example, if his chest measurement is 40 inches then he needs a size 40 coat.

If the coat comes in small, medium, large and extra large sizes, select one that is the same size as the man's normal shirt or sweater size.

Fasten all of the buttons, zippers and other closures on the coat. If they do not fasten, or they are very tight when fastened, a larger coat size is required.

Stand the man in front of a mirror so that you can see the full length of the coat. If possible, use a three-way mirror so that he can easily see the front and back of the coat.

Cross the arms to see if this causes an excessively tight feeling. If the shoulders or arms are too tight, a larger size coat is required.
