How to Install Traverse Rod Cords

Traverse rods operate through the use of pulleys and sliders. The pulleys remain in a set position and the sliders move back and forth across the length of the rod. A traverse rod can help prolong the life of your drapes because the fabric is not being worn and damaged due to pulling. However, a traverse rod cord often gets twisted or tangled and tiny frays can cause the cord to jam the sensitive pulley system. Rather than trying to adjust the cord, it is best to correct the problem by installing a new cord. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all the drapery panels from the rod sliders. Take the traverse rod down from the wall brackets. Lay the rod on a flat surface.

    • 2

Remove the old cord and measure its length. If you had to cut the cord to get it out of the rod, measure the combined length of the cord pieces.

    • 3

Cut a piece of new cord a little longer than the damaged cord. Place in the end of the new cord into the right hole of the traverse rod's upper carriage. Tie a knot in the end.

    • 4

Take the opposite end of the cord to the right end of the rod. Install the cord over and around the top pulley and go back between the top and bottom pulley.

    • 5

Put the cord into the right side of the lower carriage and exit the left side. Pull the cord farther to the left until you reach the left pulleys. Put the cord between both left pulleys. Pull the cord tight.

    • 6

Draw the cord above the top pulley. The surplus cord will form a loop that hangs down. Insert the end into the left hole of the upper carriage. Tie a knot to lock it in place.

    • 7

Slip the loops of cord over the top of the tension pulley. Pull the cord until the top carriage is over to the far right. Hold both sides of the cord tight. Position the lower carriage to the far left. Lock the locking finger over the cord on the back of the lower carriage.

    • 8

Pull the cord tight to remove the loop. Move the tension pulley up as far as it will go. Knot the cord close to the upper carriage. Position the tension pulley about three-quarters of the way up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your old cord to the store with you to ensure you purchase cord of the same diameter.

  • Attempting to untwist or tangle your existing cord requires cutting the knots, which will make your cord shorter. Reinstalling a shortened string can prevent the curtain from fully closing.
