Repairing a Defect with a Metal Shim
-
1
Select a dark, corrosion-resistant metal shim. The piece of metal should be about 2 1/2 inches wide and 1/2 inch longer than the exposure of the defective shingle. Slide the shim underneath the defect in the shingle in order to recreate a water seal.
-
2
Bend down the two back corners of the metal at 45-degree angles. When the metal shim is placed under the shingle, the bent corners will grab onto the underlying surface and keep the shim from sliding out over time.

-
3
Slide the shim underneath the defective shingle until it is completely out of sight.
Removing and Replacing a Damaged Shingle
-
4
Use the pry bar to lift the damaged shingle and expose the fastening nail shafts.
-
5
Use the slater's ripper or a notch in the pry bar to pull the nails, or use the hacksaw blade saw to cut the nails. Remove the damaged shingle.
-
6
Set the new shingle in place, with the base of the shingle about 1/2 inch below its eventual fastened position.
-
7
Drive two corrosion-resistant nails into the new shingle at a 45-degree angle into the underlayment.
-
8
Use a wood block and a hammer to knock the shingle so that it aligns flush with the existing shingles.
