How to Address Low Staff Morale
Low staff morale in a workplace can be disastrous to productivity and overall performance. It can quickly spread throughout the staff and bring down the entire organization. It is important to recognize low staff morale and take proactive steps to rectify the situation. Workers who are happy are more productive which can lead to improved profitability for the company. Offices with high staff morale generally have lower turnover rates which decrease recruiting and hiring expenses for the company as well.

1
Encourage managers to set the example for other employees. When managers and other leaders are positive and inspirational, it is more likely to spread throughout the staff. Identify key employees whom others look up to and enlist their help in changing the attitude of the workplace.

2
Keep the lines of communication open at all times. When communication decreases or stops, rumors start and can quickly devastate employee confidence. Whether good or bad news, always communicate with employees about what is going on with the business. It shows trust in your employees and will prevent rumors from spiraling out of control. Implement open door policies for all managers and leadership staff. If employees need to vent or complain, allow them to do so but only behind closed doors. Let employees know that their feedback is valued, but negativity should not be displayed in front of customers or subordinates.

Find ways to inject a more positive attitude into the workplace. Ask managers and other employees to recognize the accomplishments and achievements of co-workers. Reward employees who have excelled and be generous in sincere praise for a job well done. Recognize employees with designated parking places, gift certificates and other small tokens of appreciation.

4
Inject time for play in the work day. A staff that is always serious and allowed no time just to relax can create a stressful environment that leads to low morale. Encourage the staff to take small breaks and take the time to laugh and enjoy the company of other employees, customers and vendors. A more pleasant work environment will lead to more energy in the workplace. Allow casual dress on Fridays and provide time for team building activities both inside and outside the office.

5
Include employees in implementing changes in the workplace. Let employees know that their input is valued and appreciated. Employees who have a say in what happens at work will be more loyal as they will feel they are truly a part of the team. This in itself can increase staff morale.
