How to Place a Foot Neuroma Pad

According to the Mayo Clinic, a neuroma is a growth of noncancerous nerve tissue that forms in different parts of your body. Morton's Neuroma occurs in the foot. • 1

Visit your doctor. According to MayoClinic.com, using a foot neuroma pad might decrease pressure on the overgrown nerve that is causing you discomfort. Since feet vary in shape, it is important to visit your doctor to find out if you are in need of a custom-made foot neuroma pad. Your doctor will show you how to place the pad in the event a custom foot neuroma pad is necessary.

    • 2

Do it yourself. Your doctor may tell you to purchase an over-the-counter foot neuroma pad, often referred to as a "metatarsal pad." MayoClinic.com states that you simply place the foot neuroma pad beneath the neuroma (affected area). You may wear shoes and socks with a foot neuroma pad.

    • 3

Adhere the foot pad. If the foot neuroma pad is to be placed directly in your shoe, put your shoe on and pinpoint the part of your inner shoe the neuroma rests on. Remove your shoe. Remove the liner from the adhesive part of the pad. Place the pad inside the shoe at the desired area and press down firmly to ensure adhesion.

Place based on design. There are some foot pads that come with a band that slips over a toe to hold it in place; some that are self-adhesive and adhere to your foot; and those that adhere to your shoe. Always follow the instructions listed on the product literature. For example, when using a self-adhesive pad that adheres to your skin, remove the pad from the paper backing. Locate the correct area by holding the pad away from your skin beneath your third and fourth toes (the big toe being the first toe, and the pinky toe being the fifth). Bring the foot neuroma pad straight back until you reach the area just behind the ball of your foot. Apply the foot neuroma pad to this location by pressing the pad against your skin until it is firmly in place. If your foot neuroma pad has a band, simply slide the designated toe (usually the second or third) through the band so that the pad rests beneath your foot.

Read the directions. Due to the wide variety of foot neuroma pads, the one universal way to place a foot neuroma pad is to place it directly beneath the area of discomfort. For specifics, refer to the directions on the label of your foot neuroma pad.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always visit a doctor if you are concerned about pain in your foot or if your foot neuroma pad is not providing the relief you are seeking.
