How to Teach Children to Use a Computer
Computers no longer serve as luxuries, but rather necessities. Computers shape how we communicate, conduct business and keep track of everything happening in the world around us. So now more than ever, parents must teach their children to use a computer. With guidance, children can gain computer literacy at a young age in a safe environment.

1
Set aside regular computer time with the child. This makes computer time a bonding experience while it allows you to monitor her activities.
-
2
Start with the basics. Teach the child how to use the mouse, how to type on a keyboard and how to open a program. Other simple tasks include starting up and shutting down the computer, changing the volume and inserting a CD.

Allow the child to play games and explore kid-friendly websites. You can purchase educational computer games inexpensively at most major retailers. In addition, many children's websites like DisneyChannel.com and NickJr.com contain games and activities geared toward children of different ages.
-
4
Allow the child to explore under careful supervision. Let him click various applications, type random letters in word-processing software, insert numbers into the calculator and draw squiggly lines in the painting program. Let him satisfy his curiosities in a controlled environment while learning at the same time.

5
Talk about the dangers that computers pose. In an honest but age-appropriate manner, explain the rules and emphasize the potential dangers of the Internet. Delicately warn your child about talking to strangers in cyberspace, as well as the dangers posed by clicking on unfamiliar websites and downloading unknown software.
