How to Get a Voting Card Replaced

A voting card isn't always necessary to vote, even though new certificates are generally sent out every two years. If you have already registered as a voter with your county, you should be able to use a valid state ID, such as a driver's license, to vote. However, if elections are coming up and you want to replace your voting certificate, you may easily do so with a simple phone call.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your voter registrar. If you cannot find their phone number in the phone book, try visiting the website of your secretary of state. They should have a list of county websites and contact information for your county election officials.

    • 2

Provide the information requested. This generally consists of your driver's license number or the last four digits of your Social Security number.

    • 3

Wait three weeks for your replacement voter's card to arrive in the mail.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you move within the county, and need to replace your voter's card, you must transfer your registration to your new address after your move. You may vote at your previous precinct if your new address has not become effective in your new precinct.

  • If you move from one county to another in the same state, you must re-register in the county of your new residence. If your new registration is not yet effective and you are still registered to vote in your previous county of residence, you may be permitted to vote a limited ballot.

  • Rules change from state to state and county to county, so contact the county clerk or elections administrator for specific information about your locale.
