1
Find a topic that is of interest to the middle school students, such as peer pressure or technology. Middle school students will be more inclined to devote their efforts to the research process if they are performing research on a topic that they can relate to.
-
2
Make a schedule. Provide the students with a list of dates that state when particular aspects of the paper are due. The list can be divided into components such as the outline of the paper, the finished note cards, the rough draft, and the final copy. The students will feel less overwhelmed if the paper is to be completed in steps.

Middle school students need guidance and positive reinforcement. Therefore, take the time to read their rough drafts, and then discuss with each student improvements that they can make on their paper.
