How to Design a Shipping Crate

To design a shipping crate, keep in mind what you'll be shipping and plan the dimensions and packing material accordingly. Wood is the most common exterior crate material as it is inexpensive and easy to cut to size. However, it can also be heavy, and that weight will be a factor to consider in the overall shipping cost. You should also consider whether you want the crate to be reusable, as this will affect how you construct it.

Instructions

1. Measure the object you are planning to design a crate to fit. Write down the dimensions, adding a few inches to each side of the object you wish to ship so you'll have room for packing material.

2. Draw a three-dimensional cube with these measurements in mind and note where the edges come together and any reinforcing pieces needed for additional strength, such as between a wide side and the edge.

3. Consider whether wood, plastic or cardboard would best suit your shipping needs. Wood is strong and can withstand long distance trips and may be reusable. Plastic and cardboard are lighter weight and less expensive to ship. You may be able to use a combination.
