If fruit flies beat you to the fruit bowl, it’s time to take action. Once they settle in, these uninvited guests know how to overstay their welcome. You can pursue easy and environmentally friendly ways to rid your home of pesky fruit flies.

Things You'll Need

  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Jar
  • Plastic wrap
  • Rubber band

Remove the food source and breeding areas. Wipe up crumbs and spills from your cabinets, counter and floor. Wash dishes and clean the sink and drains. Launder dishrags.

Store trash in a covered bin. Take out trash frequently and do not reuse the plastic liner garbage bags. Do not toss food garbage into wastepaper baskets.

Cover your fruit bowl or store fruit you wish to keep in the refrigerator. Eat, cook or discard overripe fruit.

Clean open containers of fruit juice, fermented or vinegar products, for example ketchup or cooking wine. Seal them well. Keep these in the refrigerator if possible.

Check screens for doors and windows, and replace if you find any tears.

Pour an inch of apple cider vinegar into a jar. Add a few drops of liquid dish detergent. Stretch plastic wrap over the jar mouth and secure the wrap with a rubber band. Poke a few small holes in the wrap. Place this covered trap in the infested area and leave it for a week or so to catch fruit flies.
