Grow Longer Relaxed African American Hair

Relaxed African American Hair is more fragile than any other hair type; therefore we must use proper hair care technique in order for it to grow.
Follow the steps below to achieve your goal of having longer relaxed hair. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

      Keep Scalp Clean
Wash hair every 1-2 weeks with moisturizing shampoo. Only apply shampoo to scalp and rub with fingertips. Rinsing hair will allow the shampoo to travel down the strands and grab build-up.

      Deep Condition Weekly
After washing or rinsing hair, deep condition with moisturizing conditioner for at least 30 min. While deep conditioning, put on a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer. If you don't have one, try sitting under a steamer or wear a plastic cap with satin scarf and sweater cap over it to create lots of heat.

Minimize or Stop Using Direct Heat
Heat further dries our already dry hair which leads to split ends and breakage. The less flat/curl ironing, hot combing, hand blow drying, the better! Wear heat free styles like braid-outs and buns.

      Trim Hair
Though many people hate to trim their hair, it's essential to achieve length. Why? Because cutting off damaged, split, old dry ends will minimize breakage which is the key to achieving long hair. Trimming is only a problem when done excessively. I trim every 3-6 months depending on how healthy my ends are and I see a major difference in my hair's health and length.

      Don't Over Process
Chemical processes like color, perms, and relaxers should be done sparingly. New growth is great and shouldn't be relaxed at first sight of it. Allow it to grow in an inch or two and achieve much thicker/longer hair.

      Eat Right and Exercise
Try a healthy hair vitamin and eat 5 servings of fruit and veggies a day. Also drink lots of water and be physically active. Doing all these things won't only give you softer, stronger and healthier hair, but they will also keep your entire body healthy.
