How to Appraise Antique Knives

Research is the most important component in determining the worth of your antique knives. What may seem like old relics can be priceless artifacts. You can explore a variety of resources.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the knife carefully. Search for any stamp marks, insignias or carvings that could indicate the manufacturer and date of origin.

    • 2

Photograph both sides of the blade, and the handle from the top, bottom, side and end of the hilt. Also photograph any details.

    • 3

Research online or at the library any insignias or markings you discovered.

    • 4

Research appraisers. Once you find a credible appraiser, get his permission to send your photos. Different appraisers have different techniques. If an appraiser charges, make sure he runs a legitimate business. Appraisers normally evaluate the authenticity of an item and assign a price.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have the opportunity, take the knife to be appraised at an "Antiques Roadshow" event. The popular TV show has additional resources on its website, including upcoming appearances.
