How to Sew a Patch on Kids' Jeans
Holes in kids' jeans occur with more frequency than most parents would prefer. Unfortunately, as kids play hard, holes inevitably happen. Extend the life of their jeans by patching the holes as they occur. If you choose fabric with bold colors or designs, the patches can add pizazz to the jeans that the kids will actually enjoy. Machine-stitching patches can be tricky because pant legs are so narrow. A better option for keeping patches securely on your kids' jeans is a combination of fusible webbing and hand stitching.
Things You'll Need
- Kids' jeans
- Sturdy patch material (denim)
- Scissors
- Fusible webbing
- Iron
- Serger or fray-prevention product
- Hand-sewing needle
- Denim thread
Instructions

1
Cut a patch from the patch material that is at least 1 inch larger than the hole in the jeans. Cut a piece of fusible webbing the same size as the patch.
-
2
Turn the patch fabric face down and turn the fusible webbing piece so the paper-backed side of the webbing faces up.
-
-
3
Set the iron to a medium heat without steam. Iron the fusible webbing to the backside of the fabric to adhere it. Remove the paper backing from the fusible webbing.
-
4
Place the patch in the serger and serge around the outside edge of the patch to overlock the edges and prevent them from fraying. If you don't have access to a serger, another option is to apply a fray-prevention product to the edge of the patch.
-
5
Position the patch over the hole in the jeans (webbing side down), making sure the hole is in the center of the patch. Iron the patch to the jeans to hold patch in place. Allow the jeans to cool.
-
6
Thread the needle with approximately 20 inches of double-length thread. Tie a knot in the end of the thread.
-
7
Stitch the patch to the jeans with a whipstitch, making your stitches small and even around the entire perimeter of the patch. Knot the thread after stitching around the entire patch. Bury the end of the thread in the fabric and clip off the excess thread to finish.
