How to Set Rit Dye

Rit brand dye is used to dye fabrics. It is suitable for changing the color of the fabric completely as well as brightening up the color of faded fabric and clothing. Rit dye is available in a range of colors, including colors specifically made for refurbishing blue jeans. Once the garment has been soaked in the dye, the Rit dye must be set properly to keep it from running or fading in the future.

    Things You'll Need

    • Pot
    • Measuring cup
    • Spoon
    • Rit dye, color of choice
      • 1

Fill a large pot with hot water. Use three gallons of water for every one pound of fabric you are dying.

      • 2

Fill a measuring cup with two cups of hot water. Dissolve one packet of powder dye per every three gallons of water in the hot water. Alternately, add 1/2 bottle of liquid dye per three gallons of water directly to the pot.

      • 3

Thoroughly dampen the fabric in clear hot water then place it in the dye pot. Bring the dye to a simmer over medium-low heat.

      • 4

Stir the fabric constantly while the dye bath is simmering. Simmer the fabric in the dye for 30 minutes or until it reaches the desired color.

      • 5

Remove the fabric from the dye bath. Rinse and set the dye by rinsing the fabric under warm, running water. Gradually turn the faucet from warm water to cold water while rinsing. Rinse until the water runs clear.

      • 6

Hand wash the fabric in warm water with mild laundry soap. Rinse in cool water to finish setting the dye. Air dry or machine dry the fabric when you are finished rinsing.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You can also dye delicate fabrics in a bucket of hot water without simmering. Use the same method but be aware it may take longer to reach the desired color.

    • Most non-polyester natural and synthetic fabrics are suitable for Rit dye.

    • Immediately wash out all the equipment used and any surfaces that come in contact with the dye after you are done dying to prevent staining. Use chlorine bleach to clean the dye from hard surfaces.
