How to Change the IDE Controller Driver in Windows XP

The IDE controller driver allows your operating system to utilize hardware--such as hard drives and optical drives--attached to the IDE channel.       Click on the "Start" button and open the "Control Panel."

      Select the option for the "Device Manager."

      Click on the small plus sign by the line "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers."

      Select the "Driver" tab from the top menu.
