How to Patch Nail Holes for Concrete Stain

Concrete stain can do amazing things to an ordinary, drab-looking concrete surface. Unfortunately, it can also bring out minor flaws, making them stand out like sore thumbs. Because stain is a relatively transparent material, you can't use typical patching compounds like spackle and caulking to fill cracks and holes before application. If you need to patch nail holes before you apply concrete stain, you need to use special materials that will blend in with the surrounding areas.

Things You'll Need

• Razor blade
• Tube of concrete patch
• Caulking gun
• Metal putty knife
• Rag
• 80 to 120 grit sandpaper

Instructions

1. Cut the tip from the tube of concrete patch.

2. Load the tube into the caulking gun.

3. Squeeze concrete patch into the nail hole using the caulking gun.

4. Smooth the patch using the putty knife.

5. Wipe away any excess concrete patch using a rag.

6. Allow the patch to dry for one full day.

7. Smooth the area using 80 to 120 grit sandpaper.

Tips & Warnings

• Avoid overapplying concrete patch to the nail hole, or you may end up creating an unattractive ridge in the surface.

• Concrete patch takes many hours to dry. Be sure to wait a full day before attempting to sand the patch, or you may end up breaking the material loose.
