Instructions

    • 1

Place the template sheet that comes with the Kwikset deadbolt on the door. Position the center of the lock hole on the template 6-inches above the existing door knob. The template will have a mark to bend the template across the inside edge of the door. Tape the template to the door with masking tape.

    • 2

Tap the end of a Phillips-head screwdriver or an awl through the center of the door lock cylinder location on the template to mark the door. Mark the center location of the deadbolt on the inside edge of the door with the Phillips-head screwdriver or awl.

    • 3

Remove the template from the door. Drill a hole through the door face with an appropriate size hole saw using the awl mark as a center guide. Drill halfway through the door until the drill bit of the hole saw exit's the opposite side. Pull the hole saw out and drill the hole from the other side of the door. This will prevent the door facing from splintering.

    • 4

Place an appropriate size spade bit into the drill and drill the hole for the deadbolt on the inside edge of the door. Drill the hole all the through to the hole for lock cylinder.

    • 5

Position the deadbolt lock body plate over the deadbolt hole on the door. Trace the outline of the plate onto the door with a pencil.

    • 6

Mortise the tracing with a wood chisel. To mortise, place the flat side of the chisel on one of the trace lines with the bevel portion of the blade pointing to the inside of the trace. Tap the chisel with a hammer to cut through the wood. Clear out the trace area so the deadbolt plate will mount flush to the door.

    • 7

Install the deadbolt body into the deadbolt hole and secure the plate with the supplied wood screws and a Phillips-head screwdriver. Place the exterior body of the cylinder into the front of the door. Position the interior body over the inside of the door and secure the cylinder together with the two retaining screws.

    • 8

Lock the deadbolt so that the deadbolt protrudes from the door. Close the door and allow the deadbolt to touch the door jamb. Mark the center of the deadbolt onto the jamb with a pencil.

    • 9

Place the door lock latch plate over the deadbolt mark and trace the outline of the latch plate to the door edge with a pencil. Mortise the trace area with a wood chisel so the latch plate will sit flush on the door edge. Install the latch plate to the edge of the door with the supplied wood screws and a Phillips-head screwdriver.
