How to Set Up a Middle School Display Board

Teachers can create an environment conducive to learning by building a colorful classroom full or enriching materials and exciting display boards. By filling attention-getting boards with supplementary or explanatory information, teachers can increase the likelihood that their intended message sticks with students. Middle school students view these features as decorations, gazing at them throughout the class and, unbeknownst to them, absorbing the knowledge they contain. Creating display boards is an easy and fun diversion from the complex task of teaching.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the board with fabric or bulletin board paper. If you have a bulletin board in your classroom, prepare it for decoration by covering it with fabric or paper. Fabric is a wonderful choice, because it is more durable and can be more easily reused.

    • 2

Create a bulletin board alternative. If you do not have a bulletin board, but still want your students to benefit from educational decorations, select a section of wall and cover it with paper, creating an area similar to a bulletin board. You could also use tri-fold display boards and place them on tables and shelves around your room, making up for an absence of bulletin board space.

    • 3

Purchase pre-made, or cut out, large letters. Create a heading for your bulletin board using pre-cut letters that can be purchased from office or teacher supply stores. You can also take a more economical route and cut out your own letters using an Ellison die cut machine, Cricut electronic cutter or standard scissors.

    • 4

Create an attention getting, clear message. Using your bold letters, make an attention-getting heading. Use rhyme or alliteration to increase the effectiveness and creativity of your message. Plays on words also delight students and catch their attention.

    • 5

Display key information in large font. Don't overcrowd your board with information. Select key facts or concise pieces of information, type them in large, clear font and print them out on computer paper. Staple or tape this information to your board.

    • 6

Add pictures. Select images that accent the information. Print images off the Internet, or select images from newspapers or magazines. Intersperse these images amongst your facts to add excitement to your display board.

    • 7

Make the display board interactive. To create a more exciting board, make it interactive. Allow students to add information to the board, or attach a basket or bag in which students can place questions, concerns or comments. Middle school students enjoy leaving their mark on this classroom decoration feature.
