How to Enable Encryption on Linksys
A Linksys router is a device used to connect a wireless desktop or laptop. One option when setting up the wireless router is encryption. Encryption is a security measure used to protect users' information. Better encryption schemes make it more difficult for hackers and identity thieves to steal your private information. For this reason, it's important to set up encryption on your Linksys router. Encryption is enabled in the wireless router's administrator's console.

1
Open a web browser and enter the IP address for your router. For most Linksys configurations, the IP address is 192.168.1.1. Enter the administrator's username and password. This brings you to the main window in the Linksys administrator's console.
-
2
Click the "Wireless" link at the top of the console. Within this screen, click the "Wireless Security" link. If you have encryption disabled, the drop-down box displays "None."

3
Select an encryption type from the drop-down box. You can choose WEP or WPA, but WPA is the preferred encryption scheme for most router installations.
-
4
Select "TKIP" for the type of WPA encryption and enter a passphrase in the text box underneath. This passphrase is what users need to enter before gaining access to your network.
-
5
Click the "Save Settings" button. Any wireless machine that is connected to the network will need to be reboot and the new passphrase entered when the user is prompted. The connections are now configured for encryption.
