How to Measure a Women's Head for a Hat

Until the 1960s, hats were a major fashion accessory for women. In the Victorian period, it was almost unheard of for a woman to leave her house without a hat. The bonnets of that time evolved into the cloche style of the 1920s through 1940s. In the following years, miniature hats came into style. In the mid- to late 1960s, however, women's hats dropped off the radar for several decades before beginning to become popular again. If you are considering joining the trend, one of the first things you will need to know is your head size. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure your hair is flat and out of the way. If it is tied back in a ponytail, braided or otherwise styled, it may interfere with your head measurement.

    • 2

Place the end of the measuring tape in the center of your forehead.

    • 3

Wrap the tape gently but snugly around your head to meet the end you're holding on your forehead. Keep it just above the tops of your ears, and make sure it goes around the largest part of the back of your head.

    • 4

Pinch the part of the tape measure that meets the end on your forehead, and pull it away from your head so that you can look at it. The number on the tape measure will reveal the circumference of your head, which corresponds to your hat size.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind that your hat will fit with the same snugness as the tape measure, so make sure that the tape measure is neither too tight nor too loose as you measure your head.
