How to Become an Architectural Tech

Architectural techs (who are also called drafters) assist architects and engineers by building models or preparing rough drawings related to the architects' designs. When the designs are approved, techs prepare final working drawings for buildings, which are then used as blueprints for construction.

Instructions

    • 1

Take several high school courses that relate to this position, if possible. Suggested courses include math, visual arts, computers, technology, design, physics and drafting.

    • 2

Apply to a technician program in college. You can take either a one-to-two-year technician program, or a two-to-three-year technologist program. Technologists' extra year of study gives them a broader knowledge base, which allows them to perform a wider range of tasks. These programs can be found at community colleges and technical institutes.

Participate in a co-op placement or internship if it is available at your college. With this program, you'll get to work alongside an architectural tech and experience first-hand what they do. Although you'll not be directly working with the individual, you will get a feel for the work environment and will be able to list the experience on your résumé.

Obtain certification from the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA). Although employers usually don't require their employees to be certificated, this credential demonstrates your knowledge and understanding of the field.
