How to Remove a Honda Alternator Belt
Replacing the alternator belt on your Honda is important as the drive belt wears over time due to heat in the engine bay and stress placed on the belt from continuous tension. The belt begins to crack and may eventually break, causing the alternator to become inoperable. This can cause your vehicle to stall because the alternator is the electrical generator in the car. If the alternator isn't working, the battery and ultimately the ignition system won't receive an electrical charge which will cause the vehicle to shut off. To avoid this, check your belts periodically to make sure they are in good condition.

Open the hood and prop it up.

Remove the negative terminal of the battery with a wrench.

Loosen the lock bolt with a ratchet and loosen the belt tensioner until the belt is loose enough to remove. Honda engines use multiple drive belts rather than a serpentine belt, so each belt must be removed separately with its own lock bolt and tensioner.

Pull the alternator up and down repeatedly until the belt comes out.

Install the new alternator belt onto the alternator and crank pulleys.

Tighten the tensioner with a ratchet until the belt has approximately 1/2 inch of deflection. To check, place a ruler vertically against the belt. Push down on the belt and measure how far down you are able to push it. If you are able to push it more than 1/2 inch, it is too loose. If you aren't able to push down to 1/2 inch, the belt is too tight and could cause damage to the alternator.

Tighten the lock bolt with a ratchet to keep the tensioner in place.
