How to Keep Red Wasps Out of Your Pool & Yard

Red wasps like to build their umbrella shaped nests in sheltered areas like under the overhang of your patio or home eaves. The nests are recognizable with their small stems and honeycomb cells. Because wasps need a lot of water, they are attracted to both underground and above ground pools. If you live in a mostly dry environment, your pool is more susceptible to wasps. Although little can be done to deter them from building their nests in and around your pool and yard, you can get rid of red wasps by finding and destroying the nest. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Red Wasp Removal

    • 1

Secure your sleeve openings and pants legs with string or rubber bands. Put on goggles to protect your eyes from any chemicals in the wasp killer.

    • 2

Stand 10-15 feet away from the nest and spray it with the wasp killer, WD-40 or kerosene, all of which will kill the wasps. Spray the nest a second time until you are certain most of the wasps are dead.

    • 3

Wrap the heavy garden bag around the nest. The bag needs to be thick enough to ensure any wasps that might be left cannot sting you through the bag.

    • 4

Tie the bag securely with string and submerge it in water to drown any remaining wasps.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't want to use chemicals, you can look for a decoy wasp nest at your local hardware or gardening store. Wasps don't build their nests next to other wasp nests. It's safe for the environment and weatherproof.

  • Keeping your pool and yard free from food, food wastes and crumbs to help to prevent wasps from foraging near your home.

  • If you are allergic to the venom from a wasp sting, contact a professional to get rid of any wasps near your pool or yard.

  • Large infestations are also best left for a pest control professional.
