Watch for the words "simulated," "faux," "man-made," "resin," and "glass." These are all words associated with fake pearls.

Look at the drill holes on the sides of the pearl. The drill holes in fake pearls tend to be larger than real pearls.

Run the pearls across your teeth. Real pearls feel grittier and have bumps. These are caused by the nacre of the pearl. A fake pearl is smooth.

Place your pearls in the sun. A real pearl will have variations in color and iridescence, while a fake would have a one-toned, flat color.
