How to Repair a Car Leather Tear

Leather seats are more expensive than regular fabric seats, but they add to the value of your car. To maintain that value, they need to be cleaned and cared for properly. Applying a leather conditioner periodically can extend the life of your leather as well. Leather conditioner helps keep your car's seats soft and supple, but even so, the occasional tear may occur. It's possible to fix small tears in your leather seats by yourself, saving money on professional repairs. However, if you have deep gashes or extensive wear, professional services are recommended.

Things You'll Need

• Leather repair kit
• Alcohol pad

Instructions

1. Purchase a standard leather repair kit, which is available at home improvement stores or even online. Make sure that the kit has the same color leather as your seats.

2. Buff the area around the tear lightly, using the sandpaper included in the kit. Rub that area with an alcohol pad. This is important, as it ensures proper adhesion of the patch.

3. Fill large cuts or tears with the extra leather included in the repair kit. Apply the adhesive to the spare leather to hold it in place.

4. Match the color of your car seats to one of the patches of leather in the repair kit. Cut the patch down to the right size, making sure it's big enough to just barely cover the tear.

5. Find the right color dye for your leather seats, using the color matching guide. Mix the dye with the leather compound with a toothpick until it reaches a uniform color.

6. Spread a thin layer of the leather compound on the patch with the toothpick, being careful to break up any clumps. Smooth the compound a tiny bit past the patch so it stays in place. Allow the compound to dry for at least six hours before sitting in the seat.

Tips & Warnings

• Perform the repairs in a shaded, cool area if possible. Heat may prolong the drying process.
