How to Get Rid of Wax Stains on a Winter Coat

Dripping candles most frequently cause wax stains on fabric. Simply scraping the wax off the fabric often does not remove all of the residue and a wax stain remains. Removing wax stains effectively requires a multistep process consisting of removing the excess wax and removing the remaining wax residue. Whether you remove wax stains from a tablecloth or winter coat, this method works for most fabrics. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the coat on a flat surface with the wax stain facing upward.

    • 2

Place an ice cube on top of the wax stain and allow it to sit for 60 to 90 seconds.

    • 3

Remove the ice cube and attempt to scrape off as much of the top layer of wax as possible. To do this, place the knife flat against the surface with the blade facing toward the wax stain. Turn the blade tip downward by one or two degrees and then slide it under the wax. Do not bear down on the fabric as you may accidentally cut a hole in the coat.

    • 4

Brush away the crumbled wax with your hand.

    • 5

Apply one to two teaspoons of mineral spirits to a clean, dry cloth.

    • 6

Place the cloth over the wax stain and gently blot it. Continue blotting until the waxy residue disappears.

    • 7

Allow the coat to dry and examine the stained area to see if all the wax stain is gone. If any of the wax stain remains, retreat with additional mineral spirits.

    • 8

Hang the coat in a well-ventilated location so the coat dries completely and the odor of the mineral spirits dissipates.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test the mineral oil on an inconspicuous part of the coat to make sure the oil won't harm the fabric.
