How to Make Science Journals With Kids
Science journals or science notebooks are becoming a popular tool used in many science classrooms. These notebooks allow students to improve their communication skills in science. They provide a way for students to practice and enhance their scientific thinking, while at the same time integrating the subjects of reading, writing, science and math. For teachers, science notebooks are a valuable assessment tool that allows them to have a record of student growth and learning and to provide insight into students' thinking and comprehension.

Give each student a bound composition book to use as his science journal. Instruct each student to write his name on the front cover of the notebook with a permanent marker. If you are using science notebooks with more than one class of students, have each student write his homeroom teacher's name on the cover also.

Have each student start on the first page and use a pencil to begin numbering the pages on the top right hand corner. This helps to keep the science journals organized and makes it easier to find specific entries.

Save the first four or five pages to be used as the table of contents. Have the students write "Table of Contents" at the top of each of these pages. Students will use these pages to record the entries in their journals and their page numbers.

Use the science journals for students to record questions, ideas and thoughts on different science topics and experiments. Use them for note taking and for recording observations, procedures and explanations. Students can also use them to draw diagrams and charts and tables.

Tips & Warnings
If you have a grading rubric or checklist that you will be using to assess the notebooks, provide each student with a copy and have her glue it inside the front cover of her journal.
For older students you can use the last pages of the notebooks to create a glossary of science terms and definitions.
Spiral notebooks can also be used, but they don't hold up as well as the bound composition books and you may find that the science journals begin losing pages as the year progresses.
