How to Replace a Toilet & Sink

Replacing your bathroom sink and toilet can update the look and feel of your bathroom. New fixtures of any kind, often adds value to your home as well. Replacing the toilet with one that is more water efficient also allows you to lower the water bill. Bath sink and toilet replacement is quite easy to do.   1. Toilet Replacement

    • 1

      Turn off the water supply valve, which is located behind the toilet. Use a wrench if needed. Spray lube on the handle if it won't turn easily. Wait about ten minutes, then the valve should turn off.

      Flush the toilet. Then place a towel or two in the bottom of the tank to soak up any water that is left over.

      Place the bucket under the supply line. Apply the wrench to the toilet supply line at the wall side. Loosen and remove it by turning counter-clockwise. The bucket will catch any water left in the line.

      Remove the toilet base screw, located at the bottom and sides of the toilet. Remove the two toilet nuts, using the wrench. Apply spray lube if needed and wait about ten minutes before loosening the toilet nuts.

      Gently rock the entire toilet back and forth and lift it off the floor. Use a friend to help you do this. Scrape away the remainder of the wax ring, which is around the toilet drain hole.

      Install a new wax ring on the floor. Purchase one of the "toilet-to-go" packages, which include the assembled toilet, wax ring, and seat, all in one box.

      Place the new toilet on the floor. Center it over the drain and wax ring. Have your friend help you put it carefully in place. Tighten down the toilet nuts and put the covers back on. Install the seat, using a screwdriver.

      Hook up the supply line and tighten. Turn on the water and flush the toilet a few times. Check for any leaks.

    Replacing a Bathroom Sink

      Disconnect the wall tube from the wall, under the sink, using the wrench. Turn off the water valves and remove the supply lines. Use spray lube if any connections are stubborn.

      Remove any sink clips, using the screwdriver. Use a knife to scrape away the silicone seal from around the sink. Lift the sink, plumbing and all, up and off of the vanity base.

      Turn the new bath sink upside down.Install the new sink drain in the bottom of the sink. Separate the drain into it's two sections. Apply sink putty to the inside of the sink. Push the top section of the drain into the sink top. Place the bottom section of the sink drain, and it's seal into the hole from the bottom. Thread the two sections together and hook up the sink drain linkages.

      Install the faucet through the new sink holes and tighten it down. Hook up the supply lines to the bottom of the faucet. Install the p-trap and wall tube to the bottom of the ink. Just leave the connections slightly loose for now.

      Flip the sink over and install it into the sink hole opening. Tighten down any new clips or apply silicone to the outside perimeter. Go under the sink and hook up the wall tube to the wall. Reconnect the supply lines. Use the wrench to tighten up all the plumbing connections. Turn the water on and check for any leaks.
