How to Weave a Lanyard
A lanyard is a handy key holding method that can be hung on a hook or around your neck, or easily found in a bag or purse. A macramé lanyard is a long necklace made out of embroidery thread that is tied in knots to make a pretty pattern. Woven lanyards are a fun, homemade craft that you can do in your spare time, or make as gifts for friends and family.

1
Purchase about 12 yards of embroidery thread or hemp. You can buy all of the same color, or separate it into 2 different colors that are 6 yards each in length. Separate the thread so you have 2 equal lengths of 6 yards each.
-
2
Fold each length in half. Place the loop of one folded piece of thread over and around the bottom of the key ring, then insert the other ends of the thread downward through the loop, hitching the thread to the key ring. Repeat this with the second piece of thread so that both threads are next to each other on the ring. You will have 4 strands hanging off of the key ring.

Tape the key ring to a table or other stable surface. Imagine that the strands are numbered from left to right as 1, 2, 3, and 4. Begin by crossing the 1st strand over the top of strands 2 and 3 and then under strand 4.
-
4
Thread strand 4 beneath the 3rd and 2nd strands, and insert it into the loop created by the 1st strand. Pull the ends of the 1st and 4th strands in opposite directions to tighten them, as if you are tightening a knot. The 4th strand will now be on the left side and the 1st strand will now be on the right.
-
5
Pull strand 1 over the top of strands 2 and 3 and under the 4th strand. Cross the 4th strand over the 2nd and 3rd strands and through the loop created by the 1st strand. Pull them tight again. The 2 knots you've made should be directly next to each other.

6
Continue this process, weaving the entire lanyard. When you have reached the end of the thread, bring it up to the key ring again and tie the end around the key ring next to the starting point of the thread.
