How to Track a United States Post Office Package

The United States Post Service (USPS) has seen a decline in business over the last several years with the popularity of companies like UPS and FedEx. These companies, offering features such as package tracking and delivery confirmation, have taken away business from the USPS. However, the USPS now offers several features to compete with many of these private companies, including the ability to track an Express Mail package domestically and several other items internationally.

Instructions

    • 1

Package the item you wish to ship in protective packaging, ensuring that your package is safe and secure. Bring this package to your local USPS office.

    • 2

Select an Express Mail envelope to put your shipment in. If you are shipping documents, a flat-rate envelope is available for shipment. If you are shipping a larger item, take it to the counter at the post office to receive a package label. For international shipments, choose a Global Express Guaranteed, Express Mail International or Priority Mail International package.

Instruct the postal worker where you would like to send the package. You will receive the estimated delivery date for your package; overnight delivery is available for most locations. You will also receive the actual cost to ship the item. Take your tracking number from the postal worker and keep it in a safe location.

On a computer, visit USPS.com and select "Track & Confirm." Input your tracking number into the text box and click "Go." On the screen, you will see the current status of your package.

Tips & Warnings

  • USPS.com will provide you with updates as to the status of your package. In addition, you can also sign up for Track & Confirm by email. Selecting this option once you enter in your tracking number provides you with two options. You can select to have all of the information concerning your package emailed to you at once, or you can select to have live email updates continuously sent until the package has been delivered. You can also choose Proof of Delivery, which provides an emailed, mailed or faxed copy of the recipients signature to the destination you determine.

  • A "gadget" is also available for your iGoogle home page that allows you to track and confirm USPS shipments. Install the toolbar, visit your iGoogle page and input the tracking number to view your package's recent status.
