How to Design a Pack for a Camel

There are two types of camel: Camelus dromedarius (or dromedaries), which have one hump, and Camelus bactrianus (bactrian camels), which have two humps. They are animals that can be raised to produce milk, slaughtered for their meat, and can also be trained as beasts of burden. Also, camels have been used by the military forces as cavalry since ancient times. Desert riders, local and foreign, enjoy the pleasures of riding these exotic animals.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your camel's girth. Do this by wrapping the measuring tape around its back and chest, just behind the elbows. Take a second measurement from its back, below the base of the neck and around the front of its chest.

    • 2

Cut a piece of fabric that measures half the length of the girth.

    • 3

Cut another piece of fabric that is 2 inches wider than the length of the fanny packs. Fold the edges of the fabric under it and sew, creating a seam.

    • 4

Cut a piece of fabric to the following measurements: 2 inches wide, 3/4 of the length of the girth. Cut in half. Sew each piece to each end of the big fabric rectangle at the corners.

    • 5

Open the fanny packs and sew them to the fabric, one at each end, to make your saddlebags.

    • 6

Place the saddlebags on the camel's back. They could be placed between the humps in case you have a dromedary, or it can go over the hump if your camel is a bactrian. Determine where to attach the chest straps by aligning the saddlebags. They should be straight across the camel's chest.

    • 7

Cut a strip of fabric just a bit longer than the chest measurement. Sew that strip of fabric to the saddlebags at the points you have determined on step 6.

    • 8

Slide the saddlebags over your camel's head and tie the girth straps around its chest, just behind the elbows.

Tips & Warnings

  • When placing the saddlebags on the camel, be sure to attach them right side up.

  • Before riding your camel, move the saddlebags from side to side to make sure they're attached properly, so you won't fall when attempting to ride.
