How to Write a Self-Evaluation for a Performance Review

Some employers have transitioned to asking employees to write their own performance review in addition to their manager conducting a review. This can be particularly helpful to the employee and possibly eliminate any surprises during the performance evaluation by the manager.

Instructions

    • 1

Enlist the help of colleagues. It can be difficult to recognize your own weaknesses and shortcomings. Ask colleagues for their honest opinions on what you do well and what you can improve in the future. Assure them that you would like to receive completely honest feedback and provide a way for them to give the feedback anonymously if necessary. When asking for feedback, request that they provide specific examples if possible to ensure that you will understand the concern.

    • 2

Be honest in your review. Listing your accomplishments will most likely be an easy task, but listing your shortcomings will take more effort. Realize that your manager has probably already noticed any weaknesses that you have and it is a show of professionalism and maturity to be willing to address these on your own. With each weakness identified, complete a game plan for how you can improve upon it in the future.

    • 3

Devise a list of goals and plans for the future with your current position. Write in detail where you would like to be in one year in terms of your career. Craft your goals based on obtaining that position. If you need more education or training, list that along with how it can be accomplished. If you would like to improve your presentation skills, list that as a goal along with committees or groups you could become involved with in the organization to develop those skills. With each goal, devise a plan with a specific set of steps and a timeline for achievement.

    • 4

Review your files and business calendar for completed projects and accomplishments that you may have forgotten. Include a list of all of your achievements since your last performance review, including any volunteer activities or group involvements that have reflected well on the organization.

    • 5

Reassess your last performance review and list the goals that were given to you and how you achieved those goals in the specified time period. Demonstrate how you have improved upon noted weaknesses that were mentioned in your last review.

Tips & Warnings

  • Type your self-evaluation and deliver a copy to your manager during your performance review.
