  • 4" by 4" lumber
  • Jigsaw or circular saw
  • 4" wood screw
  • Drill

      Cut a 1 ½" by 6" notch out of the bottom of a 4" by 4" post. Check to make sure both cuts are square so that the post will fit securely against the rim joist. Cut the post to length. If your finished rail will be 42" high, the post should be 48" to 52" long.

      Reinforce the rim joist by adding another rim joist behind it. Alternatively, you can attach another layer to the front of the rim joist.

      Place the post at its desired location so that the notched portion of the post fits over the rim joist. Drill four pilot holes in a diamond pattern and insert 4 ¼" diameter wood screws.

      Using a carpenter's level, check to make sure the railing post is level. If it needs adjustment, insert cedar shims to bring the post vertical.
