How to Find My Windows Live Email Server Type

Once Windows Live Mail is set up, there is rarely a need to revisit your account settings. If you didn't set things up yourself, however, you may be curious what type of email server you're currently using. Finding out is easy, and with just a few clicks of the mouse, you'll be able to tell whether your email server type is POP, IMAP, or HTTP.

Instructions

    • 1

Using your mouse, click on "Tools" on the menu toolbar.

    • 2

Under the Tools menu list, click on "Accounts."

    • 3

Now that the Accounts window is displayed, select an email account listed under Mail and click on the "Properties" button.

    • 4

Click on the "Server" tab, and your email server information will be displayed. The server type is listed under Server Information, where it says "My incoming mail server is a _____ server".

Tips & Warnings

  • Windows Live Mail allows the use of three types of email servers: POP, IMAP, or HTTP. If you're unsure what type of email server you should be using, contact your internet or email provider.

  • While the steps shown here are performed using Windows Live Mail 2009, they should work for any previous versions as well.

  • Unless you are technically savvy, refrain from making any changes to anything on the Server tab. While it doesn't damage your mailbox to do so, you will not be able to continue sending or receiving email if these settings are altered.
