How to Remove the Shutdown Option on Windows XP

Windows XP makes it easy for you to shut down your computer from within its "Start" menu. If you've set up your computer in a public place, you may wish to prevent people from randomly shutting it down. Customize the Windows XP "Start" menu to disable and remove the shutdown option.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" in the lower left corner of Windows XP.

    • 2

Select "Run." A new window will appear.

    • 3

Type "gpedit.msc" in the text box and press "OK." A new window will appear.

    • 4

Click the "+" symbol next to "User Configuration," then do the same for the "+" next to "Administrative Templates."

    • 5

      Double-click "Start Menu and Taskbar."

    • 6

Double-click "Remove and Prevent Access to Shut Down Command." A confirmation window will appear. Click "Enabled" and press "OK." The shutdown option will now be gone from your Windows XP "Start" menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • To shut down Windows XP with the shutdown option gone, you must use the Windows command line interface. Click "Start," move your cursor over "All Programs," hover over "Accessories" and click "Command Prompt." A new window will appear. Type "shutdown -s" and press the "Enter" key on your keyboard. Windows XP will now shut down.
