How to Fix Power Settings in Windows XP

There are many reasons you may want to adjust the power settings in Windows XP. You may want to conserve energy, change the length of time before your monitor hibernates or conserve battery power on a laptop. Windows XP power settings are easy to configure using the Control Panel. You can use these settings to adjust things like hibernation mode, how long your monitor stays active and whether you have to enter your password when your computer returns from standby.

      Click the Start button and choose "Control Panel."

      Choose "Performance and Maintenance," then click "Power Options."

      To use a preconfigured power scheme, select one of the standard options from the "Power schemes" drop down. You can customize the selected preconfigured scheme by changing the "Turn off monitor," "Turn off hard disks" and "System standby" settings on the lower half of the screen.

      Modify the settings for Alarms, Power Meter, Hibernate and Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) by clicking the appropriate tabs and choosing the desired options. These settings are specifically important for laptop computers.
