How to Disable BitTorrent Uploads

Locate and download online media using the BitTorrent file-sharing protocol, designed to download individual data pieces from thousands of users on the Internet. This helps distribute the strain of downloading across multiple computers rather than taxing a single machine. You may wish to disable uploads to the BitTorrent network if you're on a slow computer. This is possible using the official BitTorrent download client.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch the official BitTorrent client. If you don't have it installed yet, you can download it from the official BitTorrent website (see Resources).

    • 2

Click "Options" in the top menu bar.

    • 3

Select "Preferences." A new window will appear.

    • 4

Type "0" in the box next to "Maximum upload rate," listed under "Bandwidth."

    • 5

Close the window. The BitTorrent client will now restrict uploads from your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Software alternatives to the official BitTorrent client exist. Examples include Transmission, uTorrent and Vuze. These may also let you disable uploads, but the process varies by program. Consult your individual user manual for guidance.

  • Pirated material, such as computer programs and Hollywood films, can be found on the BitTorrent network but should never be downloaded. Doing so infringes on copyrights and is illegal.
