How to Delete the Security Center in Vista

The Windows Vista operating system includes a program called the Security Center that warns you of potential security threats, such as when your anti-virus software suddenly turns off. If you are using software that conflicts with the Security Center, you can bombarded with an endless series of unnecessary warning messages. Because the Security Center is an integral part of the Vista operating system, it cannot be deleted in the same way as a standard program.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Windows Vista "Start" menu and navigate to the "Control Panel." Click the "System and Maintenance" icon.

    • 2

Scroll down and select "Administrative Tools." Double-click "Services" and then choose "Continue."

    • 3

Click the "Name" icon to arrange the list of services alphabetically. Scroll down and locate the "Security Center" entry. Double-click the entry.

    • 4

Click the drop-down menu labeled "Start Up Type" and select "Disabled." Click the "Stop" button underneath the "Service Status" heading.

    • 5

Select "Apply" and then click "OK." Restart the Windows Vista operating system to remove the Security Center.

Tips & Warnings

  • You don't need to remove the Security Center to prevent it from creating pop-up warnings. Double-click the Security Center icon in the taskbar. Click "Change the way Security Center alerts me" and then choose "Don't notify me and don't display the icon (Not Recommended)."

  • Microsoft does not recommend that you prevent the Security Center from running because you will not receive notifications if your firewall or anti-virus programs stop working.
