How to Use a VGA Port on a Computer

A VGA port on your computer provides a link from your screen to your video card. This port connects standard monitors to the motherboard. VGA ports also provide laptop computers with the ability to maintain a second external monitor. The port has 15 pins that transmit video signals based on colors and video synchronizing. If you have difficulties with your monitor signal, the VGA port is the first place you should check. The connection should be snug to obtain the best signal. Using a VGA port is not too complicated, just plug the cable in and turn on the monitor.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your computer around or move to the back so you can clearly see the port.

    • 2

Match the shape of the connector to the shape of the port. If you look at the connection on the cable from your monitor, you will see a metal rectangle protruding out of a metal base. Inside the rectangle are pins. One end of the rectangle is smaller than the other. This will line up with the port. Turn the shortened end so that it is facing the same direction as the short end on the port.

    • 3

Slide the cable connection into the port so that is fits snugly.

    • 4

Tighten the screws on the cable into the computer. On each side of the rectangle on your cable connection are tiny screws. These correspond with threads on either side of the port. Turn the screws with your fingers or a small flat head screwdriver until they are tight. You will need to press the connection into the port as you tighten the screws. Do not make them too tight; they will be difficult to unscrew if you need to disconnect the monitor.
