How to Report a Lost Credit Card
The best thing to do when you lose your credit card is to report it immediately to the credit card company. You should always keep a record of your credit card numbers, expiration dates and the telephone number of the company that issued the card in a safe location in your home; do not carry this information in your purse or wallet. If you report a lost card before someone uses it to charge something, you will not be held liable. Otherwise, you may have to pay a fee of up to $50 for each card.

Dial the toll free number that you have in your records and report the card is lost. If you do not have a record of this information, go to the credit card company website to get the phone number or call toll-free directory assistance to get this information. That number is 1-800-555-1212. Most credit card companies have someone to assist you 24 hours a day.

Give the company your name and account number and report the lost card. If you do not have a copy of the account number, they will use security questions to make sure of your identity.

You should follow the phone call with written notification to the credit card company, according to the Federal Trade Commission website. State in your letter that your credit card was lost and the date you reported it. Include the credit card number in your letter and the name of the person with whom you talked. This protects you in case the person you talked to fails to cancel the card and it is found and used by someone else.
