How to Junk a Fiberglass Boat Hull

There aren't many boat salvage or junkyards, so disposing of a boat can be a hassle. Fiberglass, a very common material used in the construction of boats, is a very durable and lightweight material. When it's in a solid, catalyzed state--such as the body of a boat--you can throw it in the garbage. When fiberglass is in liquid form, however, it's hazardous to the environment, and it must be catalyzed and allowed to harden before being disposed of.

Things You'll Need

• Dumpster
• Respirator
• Safety glasses
• Right-angle grinder
• Diamond right-angle grinder blade

Instructions

1. Rent a dumpster that will be large enough to fit the cut-up boat hull. You can rent a dumpster from your local container rental service--they will deliver the dumpster to you and pick it up when it's full.

2. Remove anything that isn't fiberglass, such as metal fixtures or trim, from the boat hull.

3. Put on a respirator and safety glasses. Begin cutting the fiberglass hull in pieces small enough to be easily carried. Begin at the top of the hull and work your way down until the entire hull is in manageable pieces.

4. Put on thick work gloves to protect your hands from the sharp edges of the fiberglass. Load all the pieces of the hull into the dumpster.

Tips & Warnings

• Always wear a respirator when cutting fiberglass materials.
