How to Remove Ferrules on a Bamboo Rod
Bamboo fly fishing rods are assembled and disassembled via the ferrules mounted on the bamboo rod. Ferrules are metal and there is a male and female ferrule that are matched up and pressed together to assemble the rod in sections until it reaches its full length. Ferrules are glued to the bamboo rod. You need to apply heat to remove ferrules mounted on a bamboo rod. Pulling ferrules off a rod may seem simple but it's actually a skill that must be learned.
Things You'll Need
- Bamboo fishing rod with metal ferrules
- Glove or kitchen mitt
- Safety glasses
- Hair dryer, cigarette lighter or fireplace lighter
Instructions

1
Put on a kitchen mitt or a thick work glove and safety glasses. Apply gentle heat to the ferrule. Use a hair dryer, cigarette lighter or fireplace lighter. Don't apply any heat to the bamboo portion of the rod, just apply it toward the top of the metal ferrule.
-
2
Rotate the rod between your fingers as you heat the ferrule. If you heat a male ferrule--a ferrule that has a curved end--too close to where it adjoins the bamboo rod it can build up heat and literally shoot off the end of the bamboo like a bullet.

3
When the glue has softened sufficiently, grab the heated ferrule with the gloved hand and pull it straight off the end of the bamboo rod.
