How to Make Your Own Sewing Desk

According to Susan Wright of the University of New Mexico Extension service, one of the basic requirements for a sewing room should be a sewing desk. A sewing table can be part of a larger sewing center that incorporates areas for cutting out cloth and pressing the project as you go along, or it can simply be a place to work comfortably with your sewing machine. And while you can purchase a specialty table from a sewing supply company, you can also make your own sewing desk.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a used computer desk. A good used computer desk may be purchased at a close-out rate from an office supply or big-box discount store.

    • 2

Place a table lamp next to your sewing machine at your workstation. For machine sewing, lighting experts say that a craftsman needs at least 150 watts of incandescent lighting or 40 watts of florescent lighting to avoid eye strain while working.

    • 3

Place a lamp shade on your table lamp to help direct the light over your work station.

    • 4

Thread the cord for your lamp and your your sewing machine's electrical plug through the cord holes that are located in the surfaces of the computer desk.

    • 5

Glue a thin layer of cork to the front of a piece of plywood sheeting to begin creating a cork board for holding notions.

    • 6

Cover the cork with cotton batting.

    • 7

Wrap a layer of cloth over the batting. Bring the cloth to the back of the board and glue it in place.

    • 8

Hammer upholstery tacks to the front of the cork board in staggered lines.

    • 9

Screw picture framing eye hooks to the back of the board and thread picture wire through the eye hooks.

    • 10

Hang the board on your wall over your sewing desk using picture wire.

Tips & Warnings

  • An office-type chair makes a great chair for your sewing desk as the wheels provide mobility and the chairs are adjustable and can work with various desk heights.
